Broken Garage Door Spring? Same-Day Replacement in Toronto & the GTA
Spring Snapped and the Door Won’t Open? Here’s What to Do
If your garage door spring broke, the door will feel too heavy to lift and the opener may only raise it a few centimetres. TBC Garage Doors replaces broken springs across Toronto and the GTA, usually the same day, with the common sizes on the truck. Call 647-929-8224, Sunday to Thursday 7 AM–10 PM and Friday 7 AM–4 PM.
A broken spring is the most common garage door breakdown we see, and it often happens on the first cold mornings of the year. It can’t be repaired; the spring has to be replaced with one sized for your door.

Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is Broken
- You heard a loud bang, like a firecracker, from the garage
- The door feels extremely heavy or won’t lift by hand
- The opener hums or lifts the door only a few centimetres, then stops
- There’s a visible gap in the spring above the door
- The door is crooked or the cables look loose
What to Do When Your Spring Snaps
Don’t keep pressing the opener button. Without the spring, the opener is trying to lift the full weight of the door, which can strip its gears or bend the door.
Keep the door closed if you can, and keep people and cars away from it. If your car is stuck inside, call us. Don’t try to lift the door by hand or force it open with the opener.
Never try to replace or wind a spring yourself. Springs are under high tension and can cause serious injury.
Torsion vs. Extension Springs
Most GTA homes have torsion springs: one or two springs on a bar above the door. Older and some single-car doors use extension springs that run along the horizontal tracks. We replace both types, and if your door has two springs we usually recommend replacing both so they wear evenly.

Measure: we measure the old spring and the door so the new spring matches its weight
Replace: we safely remove the broken spring and install the new one, and check the cables and drums

What Affects the Cost of a Spring Replacement
We give you an exact price after we see the door and before any work starts. The main things that affect it are torsion or extension springs, one or two springs, the size and weight of the door, and whether the cables or drums were also damaged when the spring broke.

Broken Spring FAQs
Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?
It’s not safe. The door is very heavy without the spring and can drop suddenly. Using the opener can also damage it. If your car is stuck inside, call us and we’ll get to you as quickly as we can.
Can you replace a broken spring the same day?
In most cases, yes. We carry the common spring sizes on the truck, so most broken springs are replaced in one visit, Sunday to Thursday 7 AM–10 PM and Friday 7 AM–4 PM.
Why do garage door springs break in winter?
Cold weather makes the steel more brittle, and springs that are already near the end of their life often snap on the first cold mornings of the year.
How long do new garage door springs last?
Standard springs are rated for roughly 10,000 open-and-close cycles, which is several years for most families. Higher-cycle springs are available if you use your door a lot.
